The side of the cart reads:
“Safari is a great browser,
for downloading Firefox.”
Too bad with Apple, all browsers are just Safari under the hood with a different skin. One of the biggest reasons I can’t switch to IOS.
Luckily this will change next year with the new EU rules, as they explicitly call out allowing alternative browser engines.
It’s a bittersweet victory. Google is rubbing its hands because it creates the opportunity for Chrome to dominate on every platform.
Keep in mind that switching out the engine under your app is probably no easy task, nor is making it well on a new platform in the first place.
True. Luckily it seems Mozilla has been preparing for this in advance: https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/07/mozilla-developing-non-webkit-version-of-firefox/
Yes, but “exploratory work” is far from a finished, proper product. Which is to say, expecting it to be available next year would be optimistic, especially since the new rules haven’t even been set in stone yet, and that enforcement typically takes time :)
On iOS, yes. On MacOS, no.
Yeah that’s cool

Keep telling yourself that. 212,000 trackers and ads blocked on FFFocus so far.
There are different reasons to support alternative browsers. While Firefox on IOS definitely does ad and tracker blocking (which is great!) Some people are concerned that the underlying engine is restricted on IOS to webkit. So it may very well be a better experience for you than safari, but that alone does not satisfy concerns of homogenization in the browser space on Apple devices.
They didn’t lie, focus is indeed also on webkit
It’s the same thing on Safari for iOS…
Firefox on iOS is straight doodoo though.
Isn’t it just Safari with a Firefox skin?
I’d heard they were opening up the platform though. Maybe proper Firefox with add on support some day?
Yes it’s WebKit underneath but the “skin” itself is crap. They may not be able to have extensions on it but at least they could fix the UI and add ad blocking and tracking protection to it.
