Looks like a grotesque 90s thing.
You’re absolutely correct and I think it looks awesome.
I love trackballs but having lived with a guy who used a trackball mouse to game whilst eating, the thing needed disassembling for cleaning somewhat regularly (Dorito dust…) so I imagine that’s why these things never took off.
Owning and still loving the Steam Controller, the haptic concaved trackpads could be set up to really feel like a trackball and, in my opinion, had all the benefits of the trackball without the downsides.
Man, I wish Valve would release a Steam Controller v2 :(

I also use a Steam controller. I like the touchpad so much that I wish there was a stand alone one that I could use for day-to-day computing activities instead of having a physical ball.
I know there are square touchpads you can buy for pointing devices, but the ergonomics are completely different. They are more replacements for finger trackballs rather than thumb trackballs. Like just give me a Logitech MX Ergo with the pad.

Shut up and take my money
I’d lose it if they came out with a steam controller 2
As a trackball user and a steam deck owner I’d love a “trackball” with valves touchpad tech in it instead of the ball
The only thing I consistently dislike about the steam controller is the texture on the trackpad. It makes my skin crawl, running my finger over it. I wish there was a smooth textured one.
Just use it regularly for 6 months and you’re golden

I’m indeed a bit puzzled why Valve didn’t take their work on Steam Deck and release the controller design without the screen in the middle as stand-alone hardware.
Me too. I wish they’d made a mode or something where you could plug it into your pc or pair it with the pc to use as a controller.
The amazing profiles I’ve made for strategy games using the Steam Controller and radial menus with custom icons just utterly rules and made RTS gaming on the sofa during the pandemic an absolute blast.
Good thinking with the trackball. Honestly when you get used to one of them bad boys it’s almost as good as a traditional mouse.
I think you mean better
(Depending on the user)
Probably also depending on the game. You can’t get as much travel out of it as a mouse on a large pad before resetting your position.
On the other hand picking up your thumb is far easier than picking up a mouse, plus you can spin the ball, and the more you get used to trackballs the easier it is to move it exactly how much you want with a quick spin
Haven’t watched the video yet but that controller looks wild and really cool.
Reminds me of the Alpha Grip controller. Has a (really janky) trackball and an entire keyboard on it.

Want
I bet adding a gyroscope would get it even closer to mouse accuracy, and he’d be able to get away with higher sensitivities for the trackball
