As I’ve used Lemmy, I’ve discovered just how politically charged it can be. This is likely just due to the nature of the software and the types of people that tend to care about it, but I’d like to avoid associating with radicals, both left and right. As such, I want to make a new account on a new general-purpose instance. I can speak German, so I was thinking feddit.org or lemmy.at, but I know nothing about them. What do you suggest?

I mean, lemmy.world is a big enough instance that it has attracted people with all sorts of views. You probably aren’t going to find it better on any other instance.

Probably just block communities which don’t moderate people enough to keep on topic.

Or if this is a dog whistle for rightwing centristism… Uh… Stop it?

feddit.org is a good choice, folks over there are pretty moderate. However as Lemmy is federated, you will still interact with extremist instances and their users such as hexbear.net or lemmy.ml, if your instance does not defederate.

You will learn fast which communities to avoid, just block then and mind your own business.

Other comments make a point though questioning your concept of left/right.

Reality isn’t politically neutral. Most niche communities are pretty apolitical but if you want to interact with news communities you’ll be out of luck.

Exactly what I was thinking. Even lemmy.world has https://lemmy.world/c/conservative - so why does the instance have to be or support politically neutrality as a whole? Just join the magazines that fit your taste.

Even for political news specifically, I’m sure there are similar magazines to https://lemmy.world/c/moderate/_politics - or alternatively, one can fill the gap by subscribing to an RSS feed from the many RSS-to-fediverse options out there, like https://lemm.ee/post/336615

By definition, reality is neutral. Human perception of reality however, is not.

I know it’s semantics, but still, it’s an important distinction

Let me better phrase that. Communication of news cannot be done in an unbiased and neutral manner - how you state things and what points you deem relevant to include will vary on your political leaning.

A classic example of this is a headline like “Mexican man murders two.” The choice of which adjectives to include in identifying someone is influenced by politics and we’ll often, rightfully, call out right wing news outlets that emphasize race or immigration status when discussing an event.

Given that one side of the political spectrum has become staunchly against many aspects of reality, I disagree with your premise.

The idea of “political neutrality” is naive or bad faith.

What you want is a right-wing sub. They pride themselves on being centrist, reasonable, and uncontroversial. You’re going to get lots of radical ideology, but don’t take it seriously bro, it’s just a joke.

Left subs may seem obnoxious with their politics, but that’s just because we’re trying to persuade you with argument instead of tricking you with flattery.

He literally never said any of that. Looked through his entire post and comment history.

      Chill out dude.

Far left probably refers to the tankies that are somewhat widespread on lemmy, not universal healthcare

    • […] you describe ideas such as universal healthcare and transgender rights […]

Wait, am I missing something? Their post doesn’t mention any of that. Can’t find anything like that in their profile or modlog either.

after being here for well over a year now, I’ve learned that people who call places like lemmy.world “politically charged” are usually jerks. The most politics I see there are “Hey I think we should you know, let people live their lives normally, even if they’re trans”. If hot takes like that make me a radical, then gee whiz I guess I am. Sorry I… want people to have health care and want people to live their lives as long as they aren’t hurting anyone.

Politically charged to me means any form of politics pushing in spaces where it isn’t necessary. All threads, and i mean all can get political on this instance. In fact, on lemmy as a whole
