  • Many years ago I worked for a small company who’d just hired a new CEO - and the guy hated me for some reason. He used every chance to make inappropriate remarks, and at times he’d just get angry and start yelling at me because his MacBook wasn’t doing something the way he wanted it. Keeping in mind, I didn’t do support for endpoints, my specialty was servers and network. I’d just let him go off because he wasn’t local, and would only come to the office for a day about once a month.

One day he called into the office and asked for me (again there are other support people who could easily help him with his macbook issues). He states he’s on a train, and can’t send or receive e-mails. Assuming he’s done basic troubleshooting, and not wanting to piss him off further, I go through normal troubleshooting steps. After several minutes he gets angry again, and starts yelling at me, so did what anyone would do - I put him on speaker phone so everyone else in the office could hear his rant. We all had a good chuckle.

Once he’d gotten it out of his system, I suggested he give me his remote access info (we’d installed remote access software on his macbook for this very reason) so I could remote into his system and see for myself what was going on. He states the software won’t display the one-time access code…so I asked him if he was connected to the WiFi, there was a pause, and then and the phone went dead, he just hung up on me. Magically his email started working after that

  • Instead of kickboxing you could try splitting your time between running, and strength training. Cardio will help with the sedentary nature of university course work, and strength training (weight lifting) will provide greater muscle control and definition. As long as you don’t over do either, you should be able to defend yourself, and your loved ones, while remaining fit and healthy. These are also good habits to develop so that you can continue after your time at your university is complete…just my .02

    • ping or mtr your router and verify there are no dropped packets (ex: ping 192.168.0.1 or mtr 192.168.0.1 where 192.168.0.1 is your router’s IP)
    • ping or mtr a public IP (ex: Cloudflare’s DNS server: ping 1.1.1.1)
    • ping or mtr a fqdn (ping www.google.com)

If you can ping your local router with no dropped packets, your local network is probably fine

If you can’t ping 1.1.1.1, then there is an issue between your router and the Internet. Look at the output of mtr to see if/where there is packet loss

If you can ping 1.1.1.1, but not www.google.com then your issue may be DNS. Verify your DNS server IPs

*If you don’t know your router’s IP, try ‘route -n’ and the default gateway should be the non 0.0.0.0 entry under the Gateway column, usually it’s in the first line

  • If you click the 3 vertical dots, it should expand to reveal a star-icon option that’ll allow you to save the comment. To view saved comments, click on your username in the upper right, then profile. There should be a ‘Saved’ tab

One other helpful snippet that’ll let you filter out posts that link to wsj, twitter, youtube, etc… lemmy.world##a[href*=“wsj.com”]

I’m no ublock expert, but I’ve mostly tested these filters, so ymmv. If you run into any issues or need to tweak a filter please follow up so we can all share 😀
