You can harvest the transformers for a couple junk microwaves to make an arc welder.
If you aren’t experienced then pretty much all power supplies, battery backups, and motors should be left to someone else.
I saw someone lose a finger (later reattached) to a washing machine with a jammed tub. It was plugged in and on when they reached underneath it and yanked the belt, their sleeve ducked their hand into the drive wheel.
That said, if it fits your personality it can be both fun and satisfying to learn how to fix stuff. I try to teach anyone who’s interested and asks. Except LG washing machines, those things can fuck right off.
I know I shouldn’t be surprised, maybe I’m not, but I find it very strange that my opsec is better than people that actually need opsec.
I always think about when Facebook allowed targeting of the us military in Afghanistan.
In 2007 four US Army helicopters were destroyed in Iraq after geotagged photos were posted on the internet.

Or Strava exposes secret bases
In a series of images, Ruser pointed out Strava user activities potentially related to US military forward operating bases in Afghanistan, Turkish military patrols in Syria, and a possible guard patrol in the Russian operating area of Syria.

I’m just a rando on the internet who wants to stay off corporate databases as much as possible. Why is this kind of shit obvious to me but not to people whose lives may depend on it?
Many email providers have a ‘do not load images’ setting. The two I use, Tuta Mail, and Proton Mail, both have it and I keep it on. When your mom sends you a photo of her new kitten you can just ‘Tap to show images’ or something similar. Images will not be loaded automatically, you need to do it case by case.
For QR codes in the wild, don’t scan them, if you do use something like Binary Eye which let’s you see the path before they are executed. At least you will know the domain isn’t cryptoscam.com
And getting more press about privacy related things, and why they’re important is always good to see.
It also let’s you install a fake icon for some normal looking app like Threema. When you tap the app it factory resets the phone.
Number 1 comment is
Reddit ain’t going anywhere fast.
If r/selfhosted has to rely on reddit as it can’t be fucked selfhosting, what chance do other subs have.
I have found Lemmy selfhosted communities excellent, they are not a large as Reddit but there are plenty knowledgeable people, often seflhosting their own little reddit.
I don’t have any experience with AhaDNS Blitz.
With RethinkDNS I have had occasional failures on their Max resolver, changing to Sky then works. That has only happened two times though, and was fixed with a few hours.
Sorry I can’t be more help.
Have a look at RethinkDNS, https://docs.rethinkdns.com/dns/ their wiki is pretty good. They have recommended block lists, and also have a feature that let’s you search inside block lists to see what they actually cover.
If you are on Android they have a companion app, you do not need to use it though. The app adds a good firewall (capture and redirect port 53 for example) and detailed logs if you want. You can block domains and specific IP addresses.
It’s all FOSS too
That’s what I use an old phone for. In the kitchen it’s a timer, notepad, and music player. I read the news on it while having coffee.
I could do that all on my main phone of course but if I’m cooking or having coffee my main phone is both off and elsewhere. I don’t like to be disturbed.
Oh, and I use it to test apps before they go on my main phone.
I just tried it on a Firefox fork on Android. Works fine if you spoof the useragent.
I hate that bs
Searx will show Lemmy results, at least on some Searx instances.
If you are OK opening things up and can use a soldering iron you could put a physical switch on the microphone.
Section 230 of the CDA
Weird right? You’d think they might check. Then they would be able to write something like this.
An initial search for KamalaHQ on The New Republic’s X account also found that the campaign account is limited. The campaign account showed up in repeated subsequent searches, seeming to suggest the issue is being resolved.

I am not the person you are replying to.
I read a lot of papers and it is hard if you don’t have background knowledge of the subject. If it’s something I am really interested in, then I will dive deep, if it’s not I will probably let it go when I get to the point where I no longer grasp what’s being said.
so, good news, we have enough canned potato salad for the next year. Um, I’m going to check to radiation levels outside. Don’t you want a Geiger counter? Naw, I’m good
A couple friends and I would get together for drinks, we all love to cook, one topic that frequently came up was ‘stuff you hated as a kid’. Then we would meet the next week and present a good version of that dish. German potato salad was the only thing no one could make edible, it just sucks as a dish.
So Kroger decided to make it worse I guess?
Duct tape of course
