  • While I don’t necessarily agree in this case, you did remind me of something Justice Kirby (an Australia Hugh Court (our highest court) Judge) wrote in his dissent in Carr v Western Australia.^1

“He was a smart alec for whom it is hard to feel much sympathy. But the police were public officials bound to comply with the law. We should uphold the appellant’s rights because doing so is an obligation that is precious for everyone. It is cases like this that test this Court. It is no real test to afford the protection of the law to the clearly innocent, the powerful and the acclaimed.”

    ^1 232 CLR 138, 188 [170].

  • While I understand that others have different priorities with phones, I’ve never quite understood why Lemmy is so enraged by the absence of a headphone jack…

I prefer wireless headphones. When I had wired headphones I used to regularly yank my phone off the counter when cooking, or try to walk away from my desk while tethered by a cord.

If I did ever need to use wired headphones, using an adapter isn’t that big a deal to me. Although I’d probably have to use a magnetic adaptor so that when I inevitably forget that I’m connected to it and walk away, my phone/entire desktop doesn’t come with me.

  • When I was more active in ED spaces, shows like these were really popular. I watched a lot of Supersize v Superskinny but didn’t really bother with the others.

Came from a starved mindset where I so obsessed with food and weight that I only wanted to watch stuff that related directly to food and weight.

There was also discussion in ED spaces I was in about how the stuff that these shows were doing was unhealthy and fucked up but had been deemed entertainment and therefore permissable. But us doing similar stuff was (rightfully) seen as fucked up.

I want to stress that no one in the communities I was in was ever judging the contestants. The only people we were viewing negatively were the producers who were putting people in danger and also like, ourselves.

  • Yeah, a channel I follow has grown and pivoted from “making a video when they have a topic they care about”, which was still quite frequent, to “scheduled biweekly videos on a topic interesting to the widest audience” and it’s really killed the magic.

Like, their choice and I wish them well, but it’s not for me anymore.
