It used to be pretty terrible, but the frameworks are getting there, starting with the languages they are based on.

Believe it or not, Java has been optimized a ton and can be written to be very efficient these days. Another great example of a high-level, high-efficiency language is Julia. And then there is Rust of course, which basically only sacrifices memory-efficiency for C-speeds with Python-esque comfort. It’s getting better.

There is a Python interpreter written in Rust. It’s apparently intended to (besides being fast an all that) make Rust scriptable.

Tbf, you could use portable / user installs (if everyone would actually do their apps right), you can (now) use a package manager and you can (sometimes…) get an official, verified version of an app through the store and even if not, installers are (usually…) signed these days (although criminals do apparently get signatures too…)… And then this all falls apart, because you need a random driver from a random website. I mean, it is the market. The market collectively agreed that buying stuff and raising rent is better than building stuff and cutting margins in favor of volume. That and they made sure to buy as much land as possible, so no one else can either.

At it’s heart, numpy is C tho. That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Python is amazing glue code. It makes this fast code more useful by wrapping it in simple® scripts and classes.

I’m mainly talking efficiency in terms of energy use. I won’t deny that some ugly decisions have been made with Java :D

Java is still significantly faster and more efficient than Python tho - because it has ahead-of-time optimizations and is not executing plain text.
