  • I really hate that California dropped all new shower heads down to 1.8 gpm. I feel very alone in this outrage. People are flying around in private fucking jets, and you want us all to take one for the team and suffer a shitty dribble of a shower every day. A generous hot shower is one of the few things that makes our lives far better than our great great grandparents. Taking out the flow restrictor is like having sex without a condom. A whole generation of suckers won’t even know what they’re missing.

I hate ordering a beer in a restaurant and it comes in a shaker pint (conical pint), which is usually a 13 oz pour. How can we have a government who verifies the measurement of fuel pumps, but not beer, when beer costs like 15x more than fuel. Fill lines are a simple, cheap, and good solution.

I hate metering lights. For those who don’t know they’re stoplights on the on-ramp to an interstate highway. Waste of fuel, don’t help with traffic.

I really hate advertisements. It seems the more I block them, the more offensive they are when one gets through.

  • There’s no projection. I feel no guilt for eating the diet of every single one of my ancestors. Zero. I do not believe animals to be sentient, and I do not equate death or servitude with suffering. It’s not that I don’t understand vegans. I do. But it’s like a religion - you have a fundamental belief, not in god, but in the consciousness of animals. Because we differ on that fundamental belief, we can reach no understanding about the ethics beyond that.

And I think it is a fair comparison. People who pay for media may also see it as an ethical baseline to pay for what you consume. And in both the case of vegans, and those who pay for streaming, the perceived benefit of that choice is in my opinion fundamentally flawed. But it’s really not a big deal to me. I was just trying to answer OPs question. I think your response only validates my analogy. Thank you.

  • I was just thinking about this. Love these videos. Cooling of a solar panel is a good application, as long as it gets cold enough for long enough to re-solidify at night.

An alcohol/NaCl solution with a stabilizer can make an ice pack that freezes colder than water. That could be used to keep ice cream frozen in an ice chest.

It would be cool to have recipes for a few different temperatures. There’s a German company Qool Products that sells PCM temperature elements (ice packs), at a variety of temperatures, to store ice cream up to red wine/cellar temp in their ice chest. With some trial and error I guess we could now make our own!

  • There are plenty of protected lanes in my city, but they just hide bicycles behind parked cars, making it less safe at every intersection.

The only way I can think that might work better would be to convert a 3-lane road (with suicide/turn lane in center), into a 2-lane road. The center lane gets converted into a two-way bicycle road - raised up like a sidewalk with curved curb. No left turns allowed for cars, only right turns. This way bicycles are visible and protected.

  • Yeah it’s typically not used for dosages, rather it’s for concentrations in solution. However strictly speaking the grams cancel in the units of ng/kg and you are left with ppt. I think of ppm and ppt as very small percentages anyway. As per cent means part per one hundred. Can’t use “permille” because it means part per thousand but sounds like part per million.

In the case of a lethal dose, I think it would be fine to say, “it’s lethal at a rate of 2 trillionths of body mass”.
