You gotta really lower your expectations for lemmy.ml

they love defending authoritarianism more than they like leftist economics.

They’re not paid to like leftist economics.

Of course, and neither Russia nor China are communist.

A lot of it isn’t actually communists, but a facade for spreading authoritarian propaganda.

I don’t want governments controlling what we see, hear, and say.

Because the Fediverse is a great target for propaganda, which is invaluable for some authoritarian countries.

Lemmy is an echochamber with relatively limited, uncoordinated moderation. 1,000,000+ monthly active users, and lemmy.ml is a flagship instance.

It’s a bummer. I love the idea of the Fediverse but it’s having some propaganda growing pains.

Hard disagree, they’re here and able to operate relatively freely with no central admin fighting disinformation.

Centralization is still a problem, but LW doesn’t have as much propaganda and aggressive moderation

Yeah, I saw someone on Lemmy showing screenshots two posts that were copied exactly from like 8 months ago except for a single new legitimate comment. It’s wild what LLMs are doing to online interaction and honestly… this is just the beginning.

Avoiding them myself is great, but long term I’d love do see the Fediverse succeed. We need to shut down propaganda if we want it to be viable. There’s no corporation or organization running the show, it’s us.
