Two reasons:

First, in many states the electors are bound by law to support the candidate that wins the popular vote in their state. The penalties may vary, but the intent is clear: to make sure people realize it is against the law in that state.

But the second reason is that each campaign actually picks their own electors for each state ahead of time. So it’s not like the state has one set that will vote either way, and who can be persuaded. All of the states that votes for Harris are sending electors their campaign hand-picked, and likewise for Trump. So each side is sending their own very partisan people, whose political success is tied to their party. Violating that will ruin their political career in that party.

Well, if the choice is between being perceived as a creep vs watching the kid get hurt, I’ll pick the option that doesn’t end with an injured kid. But if the kid is just wandering and not in danger, like I said, there’s no reason to intervene, for just the reason you listed.

Like, physically block them from going in the road by walking in front of them and say “Hey, is that your mommy over there? Go to her”.

Oh, if I’m asked, it’s a different story. It means the mom needs the help and does not mind it. But it’s a sad fact that too many people (particularly in the US) are paranoid and their mind immediately goes to the worst possible scenario in a new situation. So if I offer without any context whatsoever, they will think I’m some sort of weirdo.

Dad here. I simply don’t offer if it involves their kids, it is far too likely to be misconstrued. Plus, that mom is probably doing all she can to keep it together, and knowing that someone noticed could put her in a worse place mentally. If I’m out with my wife, she has offered out help before, and that is much less likely to be judged. It’s just a fact.

(I will offer to do things like take the shopping cart back, but I would do that regardless of whether they have kids with them or not.)

I have sometimes seen little kids wander off while their mom wasn’t looking. I do pay attention to where they go, and try to keep them in sight. Sometimes it might have only looked like they were wandering, only to find they were going toward another trusted adult. But other times you can see that moment of panic on the mom’s face when they realize what happened. It’s enough to be able to point and say “they went that way” and they can go get the kid themselves.

I won’t interfere unless the kid is going into a dangerous situation, like a street or into water. Even then, I won’t touch the kid unless it’s the last possible thing to do to keep them safe, I am more likely to get in their way and ask them where their parents are.

No, noise ordinances are the entire point, because the excessive noise is the only thing that can be causing these problems in the community. There are thousands of data centers all over the world, with fans running 24/7, and staff on hand 24/7 to tend to them. They don’t cause these problems in the community, but they also have actual walls. And I bet their employers mandate good hearing protection so their staff doesn’t have these problems.

There is no statute local police can use to shut it down, because Texans love their freedom so much, and elect freedom-loving politicians who abhor any regulations at all. Maybe if they paint the trailers black, the cops will think they are a threat and shoot them or something.

But this has nothing to do with bitcoin, other than the pop-up datacenter’s purpose is to mine it. They could have popped up a datacenter for any other purpose, and it would have the same issues.

OTOH, the State can solve this today, either by instituting regulations or allowing the county to. Heck, just putting walls and a ceiling around the thing will help. But the mining outfit, like any good Capitalist, will not spend a dime unless it is forced to, and this state thinks regulations are a tool of the devil herself.

The article says that in Texas, only a city government can enact an enforceable noise ordinance. Since this thing is nowhere near any city, all the local sheriff can do is write tickets, he can’t force them to turn it off.

Data centers are normally built with good security, and solid walls that keeps the roar of the fans inside. It seems like this mining outfit took the cheap road, and just set up shipping containers with servers inside them instead of building an actual building.

Still, these people shouldn’t be mad at the bitcoiners, they should be mad at the state laws that allow these machines to be as loud as they are with no real penalty. Maybe they should write their State Legislature and tell them the bitcoin mines are killing innocent child processes in broad daylight, since abortion is all they seem to care about.

It doesn’t work that way. First of all, Mike Johnson is the Speaker, and is next in line for the Presidency after the VP, not Jeffries. But that entire list is strictly to see who would be President if the office were suddenly vacant. The House Speaker would only take over if there is a Presidential vacancy while the office of VP is also vacant.

Should Harris becomes President due to Biden leaving office early, the office of VP would become vacant and remain so until President Harris picks a replacement, and that replacement is ratified by both houses of Congress. Sadly, in today’s political climate that is not a guarantee.

As I see it, key deadlines are:

• The party conventions, where each parties nominee will be formalized. (But recall that the actual Democratic Nomination will be done before the convention, to meet some State deadlines).

• The election itself, where voters choose which slate of electors cast EC votes.

• The electoral college election that really matters.

• The counting of the EC Votes

• the inauguration

Once the nominations are formalized, they probably can’t be undone, since there are State deadlines involved.

But always remember that people are not voting for the candidates themselves, but for a slate of electors. And while the expectation is for these electors to vote for the ticket they were pledged to, if one candidate is subject to God’s Almighty Recall Vote, they appear to have the discretion to file votes differently.

Once the EC votes are cast, though, there would probably be no choice but to accept them. (Congress recently revamped the counting process to eliminate some of the shenanigans that happened last time). I expect that if either one croaks after that, they would probably just inaugurate the VP on the ticket directly.

(Edited to add: states may be able to change EC votes after the December EC election. That date is based on a “safe harbor” deadline which makes EC votes harder to challenge. So, if the winning candidate bites it on Christmas Day there’s probably a way for State Legislatures to certify new EC votes before Congress counts them Jan 6, but we should expect a challenge to that.)

If all Reddit had was pictures of cats and porn, then getting banned would not be as big a deal. Now that it is public, being used for legit reasons, and has “money”, I am waiting for a bunch of people who are being banned for arbitrary reasons to file a class-action lawsuit.
