If you are new to Linux just use Fedora. Everything will just work and you can install all your apps via the store.
Never had issues with Gnome on low end hardware but, you can disable animations in the accessibility settings. (No extensions needed!)

I think its fixed because I haven’t encountered it in a long time. I recommend pulling Thunder right from GitHub using Obtainium instead of using fdroid. More frequent updates.
Have had Windows remove my Grub entry plenty of times but have also had Windows “repair” partitions after a failed update which will nuke your Linux install.

Don’t go around calling long supported open source apps “dodgy”. If you actually used the app you would know that its a completly different codebade. Feel free to audit the source code if its “dodgy”.
