  • What I’ve noticed reading the responses here, is a constant use of the terms non-religious and atheist.

While they are accurate and the details are on point, I find it interesting that much of the discussion is actually about secularism but no one is using that term.

Whatever the reasons for this, I think you are all (I’m assuming mostly Americans) missing a trick here. Secularism is woven into the very fabric of American society and is constantly under attack by the religious (mostly) right, especially in recent years.

As a Brit, we have had to overcome a long history of religious domination and to some extent that continues. The National Secular Society and Humanists UK work tirelessly in this regard.

I would like to see greater use of the term secular in discourse between and from Americans. I honestly believe that language has a huge effect on ourselves as individuals, and constant use of words that are our goals and that have positive connotations are extremely beneficial to us, and by extension our societies.

Just my observation, I hope that’s ok.

  • I’m a bit worried about where Mozilla is heading with this, but not really for my own sake.

I got into this whole thing because of my hatred of being advertised at. The privacy aspect is less of a concern for me, although I do appreciate it.

I threw my lot in with BigG around Gingerbread and it’s too late now. I’ve turned off a much as I can in the last year or so, but G has everything I need and use.

This would concern me more if I was younger. My teenage children are very savvy with it all. We talked last weekend about setting up Proton mail and using temporary emails for everything. I can see a Linux future for them and that’s very reassuring. They are beginning to understand the nature of online privacy and how it relates to humanity.

But as long as I’m able to block ads, that’s good enough for me. I’ll move to Librewolf etc if I have to, but if Firefox keeps working I’m not going worry too much.

Those of you young enough and/or that it makes a difference to, I wholeheartedly encourage to be as privacy orientated as possible. The world is going to need you.

  • Wednesdays are in the middle, so after lunchtime you are past half way through the week. Woohoo!

Mondays always fly by, I barely notice them.

Thursdays are when the excitement for the weekend starts to build, maybe even go for a pre-weekender.

But every week it’s there, full of important work stuff and fully aware of making the week unnecessarily long and painful.

    Tuesday.

It even sounds like it’s giving you other options but it isn’t, it’s forcing dull bleakness onto everyone. You can’t even enjoy a Tuesday night because you tried to put off Tuesday with Monday night. Can’t do that again, at least until Thursday.

Fucking Tuesday, no matter how much gets done and how well, there’s no joy in it. Just a numb acknowledgement that the time was passed as quickly as possible so we can get closer to Wednesday lunchtime.

Can’t wait for Friday, seeing old friends. Good stuff happening at work on Wednesday and Thursday.

    Fuck you Tuesday.

  • People get comfortable, relax their boundaries and behave like children.

Kids who are well behaved outside of the home are just as naughty at home as any others. It’s because they feel safe, and for kids that’s ok.

Every work place has variations on the issues you describe, depending on the personalities of staff and how management deal with them.

In my experience, the places that have the least drama are where the management are most skilled at dealing with people. Which sounds obvious but there’s a great deal of management who don’t know how to get staff to work effectively, let alone get on with each other.

Even for non management, there’s a lot to discover about this stuff in the book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni.

  • Yeah that’s my point really, saying they can’t easily watch it is a cop out because it’s easy to find ways to make it possible. Which includes facilities and equipment such as in my example, but there’s plenty in the US and I’d be surprised if they don’t have their own facility they can hire the equipment into.

The thing that got my interest is the terms used themselves. Why say it’s an old format, rather than or as well as what the format actually is?

The media used, which I quoted, is not unusual itself but it is unusual to be used for a video format. Cinema film is usually 35 or 70mm gauge, and stereo audio is usually half or quarter inch. One inch is more commonly used for multi-track audio recording.

Maybe that’s all there is to it, there being no playback device, but its all rather intriguing, and it feels like there’s more they aren’t saying.

    I demand details, goddamn it!

  • While most here are probably not wrong about changes that could well happen and our societies adapting to them, I can’t help but worry about food shortages.

We aren’t very far away from the point where insect populations start to collapse. If we can’t reverse that or even slow it down, food will follow quite quickly.

The implications are horrifying and even if humanity survives, it won’t be pretty.

If by about 2035 the causes aren’t controlled and the problems slowed down enough to prevent insect extinction, the following 10 - 20 years will see food decrease to levels that won’t sustain us.

After that, the decline will be so rapid and so brutal that no one will be making notes.

    I hope that doesn’t happen.
