  • Welcome to… being a normal Linux user

Switching distro is something every user does, thinks about doing, then does it again.

It’s normal. You just discovered a new way of using your computer, and opened a ton of possibilities in front of you, from customising your current install to the death thanks to the choice in desktops and display managers to just slap an entirely different distribution on your machine. A ton of possibles.

Try them out! There’s Live USB for about every one out there, but my favorite way is to dual-boot and see fully how the install process turns out, how the software management works, how updates occurs etc.

You’ll notice a lot is the same, a lot is different, and most any feature from a distro can be slapped on another!

To give you a taste, try openSUSE Tumbleweed - not because I think you should switch to Tumbleweed over Ubuntu, but because it’s quite different in a few key points, and I believe it is interesting for you: there’s this Rollback backup feature, a beautiful and quite simple installer, a polished user interface, a different software format, and a powerful admin tool.

Have fun with your hardware. Now backup your files and go crazy! So many out there!

    (I started with Ubuntu)

  • Hang on to your suspenders: I wear crocs 24/7/365

Summer, rain, snow, work, whatever. A pair lasts about 2 years now, in the past they where more sturdy. After a while you’re going to, first, slip on wet surfaces because of the sole being completely bald, then you’ll go through and get wet feet (or a rusty nail).

It so lightweight, so flickable away, once you start you can’t come back. I always get the “crocband clogs” in red, they don’t have lateral holes which, yeah, is more practical irl when you daily them.

  • France is 2 days away from an election which will see the Far Right grab the most seats ever in Parliament, the only question (hope really) is “will they get absolute majority or not”.

Holland fell not so long ago.

Belgium kinda holds through “sacred union” that vows to never sign an alliance with it, but at cities level it’s too late.

And Hungary is deep into it with Orban since a while now. Hungary which turn it is to lead the European Parliament (a rotating position). First political act? Go shake hands with Putin.

It’s gonna get complicated over here.

  • We just got 3 LG tv’s at work for an art exhibition. There’s no network available here (it’s a Napoleonic Fortress lol), and while they ask for it, dismissing all accounts/updates/online services is straightforward. You can delete all pre-installed apps (disney, netflix whatever) but LGtv and amazon. I can dig the model number tomorrow if you want.

    OTOH I haven’t owned a tv since 2001.

  • Apple supposedly makes good hardware, and my ‘23 mbp in 14’ has excellent battery, great trackpad, very good sound and a beast of a screen. Now I don’t like whatever material these machines are made of, they are downright unpleasant to grab or touch, and the keyboard is abismal shit. I hate it, I am seriously not using it as much as I could not because Asahi, or Fedora, or bugs, or the availability of certain software for Arm64, but because of that shit keyboard. Asahi runs great, the full Pipewire sound stack developed for it is a pleasure to work on. Switch monitoring every which way, plug Firefox into Ardour and rip youtube, it all works, period.

To me M2 with 16g of ram is about on par with an intel i12 in everyday life. Sure it will win on rendering movies or some specific stuff, but day-to-day it’s like my friend’ Carbon X1 on Mint really.
