  • I love these ideas but self hosting is simply not a solution for average citizens who aren’t skilled at such things. To them it would be like paving their own highway with bridges and also maintaining and policing them. It might be easy for you and me, but that’s because we have training and experience and we chose this way. It’s not a justifiable opportunity cost for most people.

I think a different kind of org than the googles metas and Microsofts of the world is in need, like a compute & communications co-op that can actually compete on that level of capability offerings, accessibility, performance and security.

  • Moreover I don’t think these need to be on a single scale. Like, trauma isn’t “more” than pornographic, it’s just something completely different (ideally).

There can be a scale of safe to unsafe for a variety of reasons, and people might be able to filter what they see more proactively based on their own tolerances (and interests).

But then again complexity can be a deterrence. Tagging and cataloging can be a big content management problem and I think most want to do the simplest thing possible.

But maybe content advisory could be a crowd sourced effort, using a up/down ranking on explicit categories just like we can do on posts.

  • Yes, they should be. For the same exact reason anything that is taboo but socially acceptable but definitely unprofessional should be. Real boobs, cartoon boobs, it doesn’t bother me at all but it makes me very much less likely to browse lemmy in a public setting. Setting morals completely aside, if you want this platform to thrive, you’ll have to be compassionate to the consumers of it, the user base. The community can definitely make this thing not usable if they want to. It’s about being practical.

    1. have your passport and any other docs in order now, if you’re making all these contingencies.

    2. make more objective and less speculative assessments.

    3. find ways to enjoy yourself family and friends now. And build relationships and support systems with people you know and people in your community. Lines of communication and a habit of community work will help alleviate your doomy outlook for now, and help you build a network when it’s time to respond to a bad situation, if one arises.

Stay constructive. Everyone has a plan til they get punched in the mouth, so if you aren’t trained in combat or conflict theory, you should just keep assessing your current situation, and if you want to get out, if you truly believe Montreal is a more comfortable place for you, then go ahead now, why wait, it sounds very nice. Though I would appreciate it if you’re here to vote to help our chances of correcting the illegitimate court system.

Anyway always ask yourself, “what is the best possible thing I can do right now?”.
