  • Yes. And don’t let the “no it’s a meta account only now” crowd play that card. It’s the same company sucking the same data in to the same ad drenched glory hole.

This wasn’t the case with the Quest 1 until it was. You could run that completely standalone with SteamVR after the backlash over a required account, then once the blowback subsided, they reintroduced the requirement.

We learned this last year after dusting off the OG Quest and trying to get it running with SteamVR. It straight refused to work without a FB/Meta account. Creating a new one has a bunch of bullshit hoops that failed when attempted behind any type of ad blocking DNS so I gave up and put the paperweight back in the case and moved on.

Fuck Meta. Fuck FB. And Fuck anything else Zuck and co touch.

Sorry for the rant it’s early and I haven’t had caffeine.

  • I am still so incredibly salty that my quest 1 is a paperweight because of this requirement.

It did not exist when I purchased the product. Full Stop.

When they introduced to that requirement with the quest 2 you were able to use the quest one without it with no issue. Sometime last year we tried to hook our quest one up to Steam Link and were met with a Meta Account requirement. There was no way within the UI to get around it.

In a moment of frustration, wanting to play some Beat Saber with the family, I went ahead and started the process of making a meta account only to be stopped several times along the way by various privacy layers on our network. It was insane. My PiHole about caught fire.

30 minutes in I gave up and dug out the Vive Cosmos and all 20 wires it needed. So disappointed meta is the only wireless headse with decent battery life. They ruined VR adoption for me.

Braindead aka Dead Alive is a classic for gore. It also skews to the comedy side so it’s more enjoyable on rewatches.

More recently, The Sadness was pretty nasty but definitely more mean spirited. In that same vein, Headless is pretty nasty as well.

Gore is an interesting thing as it can be a single scene or an overall aesthetic i.e. the Evil Dead from 2013 has an insane amount of blood and violence but it’s not outright gore like Rikki Oh and definitely a more pure horror film.

  • Yeah, I remember all of the vitriol we spewed at them when it felt like Steam was first being “shoved down our throats”.

But they really are a high-water mark for listening to your customers and acknowledging their feedback to produce positive change for your platform.

Now some 20 years later it really feels like most other interfaces don’t provide the level of service and usability that Steam does.

Any complaints and grievances are always valid about their business practices, the percentage cut that they take and all of the other things. You can’t however say that the platform hasn’t been a boon for PC gaming. Especially on Linux where proton has opened up a whole new world of accessibility especially for games that are too old to run with any sort of consistency on modern Microsoft OSs.

  • The 8bit do ultimates are currently my favorite controller of all time. Own several wired and wireless models (at least 1 of each version).

If you have $70 (less on pretty frequent sales) for the ultimate with Hall Sticks, I can’t recommend it enough. I reach for these over the Xbox Elite, Dual Sense Edge and Razers I used previously.

Simply a fantastic controller. And they work great with the 2.4ghz dongle or just via Bluetooth with the Steam Deck.
