  • Incoming Chinese carmaker Xpeng

Australian firm Pegasus Aerospace Corp received airworthiness certification from CASA for its driveable Pegasus E flying police car last year

you would need a pilot’s licence – not simply a car licence – to be able to eventually fly the X2 in Australia.

likely to be bungled in red tape for some time before it could take to the skies

We can take orders… you can secure one with a fully refundable $100 deposit.

So I guess a more accurate headline would be this:

“Australia’s” “first” “flying car” “now” “on sale.”

  • So, real talk? Most 2600 games are rough, and barring personal nostalgia, there’s little reason to play most of them in the age of emulation, especially arcade conversions, which sometimes nail the gameplay (but often don’t), and generally have to perform acts of violence on the visuals to make them work with the system and the business realities around their development (i.e. staffing, timeline, budget for ROM chips, etc.).

Some worthwhile ones that come to mind:

    • Combat (multiplayer only)
    • Warlords (multiplayer only)
    • Pitfall
    • River Raid
    • Pitfall II
    • Space Invaders
    • The Empire Strikes Back

It’s not that so many more weren’t fun, or even still aren’t in isolation, but it’s like we’re all the rich fat kid from Pee-Wee’s big adventure and have access to every single game on every single system, at least up until the end of the 90s. There’s no reason to play the nice port of Berzerk that looks like it does, or play the flickery Pac-Man mess, or even (I’ll say it) fight with the groundbreaking but still primitive and abstracted gameplay of Adventure.

I live in Texas and have traveled some in Europe and Mexico. Maybe the Europeans like it, but let’s generously say it’s, well, not designed for the southwestern American palate, and definitely not for the Mexican palate. Restauranteurs do what they can do, though, and the ones that survive cook what will sell, so I shouldn’t judge too harshly, especially as an American who loves Chicken Tikka Masala and Sweet & Sour Chicken. Enjoy it for what it is, but don’t assume you understand the various varieties of Mexican cuisine from either side of the border.

Now that I’ve been nice, I’ll be personal: it ranges from god awful to utterly inauthentic but edible. The worst I ever had was at the late and unlamented “Texas Embassy” in London. Apart from a passable margarita, it was utter garbage. The “cheddar” looked like a dayglo shotgun site, the salsa was ketchup with varying amounts of weak-ass vinegar-pepper sauce stirred in, the white cheese was neither queso fresco nor Jack, but possibly mozzarella. All tortillas were clearly bagged and stale. Spice profile was all over the place, but never hot. Europeans think paprika belongs in Mexican food. It does not.

Perhaps not ironically, the better tacos come from your run of the mill “every fast food” takeaway. Some places trying to get “upmarket” from greasy American fare —that they can’t do right anyway— will have fresher tortilla-like flat breads and will come up with flavor profiles that sort of evoke the nicer “authentic Mex” places I’ve been to in Texas and Mexico (including CDMX and Monterey, in addition to your standard beach resorts), but it’s still off, saved by having actually been done well, though still within the inauthentic context.

  • Just go in on the assumption that you only narrowly missed out last time, and some other consideration, whether a new opening on a similar team, or the previous candidate not working out, has left you in a good spot. It’s been a while since I was doing any hiring, but I often had to pick between people with similar credentials and similarly good interviews. I had to pick somebody, but I would have been happy taking my chances with either candidate and would have been quite relieved if they were still interested when the position opened back up. From the other side, when I first started at my current company, at least four or five of us came on to do the exact same job within a few months of each other, and the difference seems to have come down to how busy the hiring manager was when they first got the budget to bring someone on.

  • I have mostly disengaged from participating on Reddit, but I still pop in for hobby and special-interest subs, which have been slow to really build traction on Lemmy.

I only have one comment like that, but in checking the poster’s history, it just looks like they dived head-first into the fountain pen rabbit hole last year. I think in my case it might be a product of the Google deal and their promoting reddit in search queries by default. Pretty easy for a regular user to search “what fountain pen did the dr. cox actor have in Office space?” and forget to check the date before throwing a (likely correct) answer in there.

  • I have a Leap v1 from a surplus store, and a Mirra from when our company let the lease go on the building nobody went to anymore. Very much worth it on both fronts. A huge thing with “nicer” chairs is that they allow you to shift as you move throughout the day. A lot of people fixate on the “S” part of RSI and try to make sure everything is situated just so, but it’s also important to work on the “R” and to move around, standing of course, but even just being able to move around and have multiple comfortable seating positions can be helpful.

  • So I guess the obvious answer is some random shovelware 2600 game that barely works, so that’s not much fun. In terms of games that have some traction and nostalgia, I can think of a couple that just don’t do it for me. YMMV.

Contra is more of a beatdown than an enjoyable challenge, the konami code is iconic for a reason.

Defender is inscrutable and overambitious and the control are a weird early take on the side scrolling shooter.

Most arcade driving games were (and are) quarter eaters that aren’t trying to do much that’s interesting once you’re behind the wheel.

  • I suppose there’s an element of preference as well. If !myinterest@instance exists and is limping along with 80 subscribers and a post once a month, is that less discouraging? Maybe 300 subs and a post every other day is adequate? At the risk of scope creep, maybe the answer lies in more data and options to account for the preferences of those new to the Fediverse. I concede I don’t have answers though, and I’m obviously putting less work into it than you are.

Fight the good fight, friend. I need more posts about old TV shows and niche hobbies, so we just need more decent people, however they arrive. :-)

  • IMHO, the APIpocalypse resulted in too many communities that died on the vine and discouraged their creators and few visitors. Funneling that energy into fewer, more general communities to build up views and conversations strikes me as a a necessary forerunner to a massive “Cambrian Explosion” type of thing. Subreddits, for the most part, naturally evolved because there was already a critical mass of users interested in the topic, not because the sub existed first and attracted the users. What would you think about a different approach to collect various subreddits and file them under healthier lemmy communities that are not one-for-one, but still relevant?

    Sub : Community

    • askreddit : asklemmy
    • amitheasshole : asklemmy
    • explainlikeimfive : asklemmy
    • gaming : gaming
    • pcmasterrace : gaming
    • minecraft : gaming
    • etc, etc.
