  • I went to Texas A&M where H W’s library is. It’s a… nice building with… uh… museum about him.

Story about H dubs though. I met him. It was at a BBQ joint on the side of the road halfway between College Station and Houston. The town probably has less than 2000 people living in it.

I was meeting my dad for lunch. There were a bunch of suits in sunglasses and earpieces standing in a dirt parking lot full of trucks with rust holes in them.

We walk in and there are H W and Barbara eating brisket.

  • People talk about being there “for” someone. Here being there “with” him is more important. Something as mundane as letting him take a nap on your couch while you fold laundry. The more regular, boring or routine the better. Best if it’s something you can do without talking. That’s harder since you can’t go see each other, but maybe just leaving a video call on or suggesting it to someone else would help.

  • Oh yea folks on lemmy are super helpful. And some of them are mentors. To me there are two qualities of a good mentor: time and patience. They will take a student and work with them for however long it takes. They know the student won’t get it immediately, so they wait. They recast the question. They will provide personalized examples. They spend enough time with a single student for that student to mature as much as they can while the two are together. Think Mr. Miyagi from the karate kid.

Just as with the other two, there are drawbacks. Mentorship takes time. I’m from the standpoint that if we spend that time, and I mentor 2 people, and you mentor two people, and they mentor two people, we reach critical mass and we start reaching the normies who want, but don’t have another way. I’m not as wise as Mr. Miyagi and I’m quite snarky with my opinions 🙃

  • I refuse to contribute to the acceleration of climate change. Especially due to fivolity such as the mass production of fast fashion style memes. Used once, and thrown away forever. I will not permit the continued violation of our rights used to create llms. Big tech and the government’s use of mass survailence and ai have solidified our position in the distopian present. So no. I don’t use ai. But I do recycle. And at least I think I’m fun at parties…
