Flies actually have a pretty sensitive sense of smell, at least for some things. Good vision, too.
With how bad my dog’s poop smells, I’m not surprised that any flies within a dozen or so feet are able to hone in on it so quickly.
It’s probably the skatole.
Sounds logical.
