I’ve spent a lot of time looking for decent open source alternatives to these platforms. Most alternatives tend to be somewhat buggy or barely work often (In my personal experience.) Can anyone suggest any alternatives they have had a good experience with and use actively?
Just like to say thanks again for the suggestion. Been using my Navidrome (+ Metube) instance for a couple hours with Subtracks client & it’s prefect!
navidrome looks awesome (including all the amazing third party client options), never heard of it before. Deffo will try!
This might sound stupid but CDs. I buy CDs and rip them to FLAC to listen with Strawberry Music Player or Jellyfin.
This is the way
Bandcamp isn’t open source but pretty fair IMO and you can stream via Newpipe or Kodi plugin. It is not a direct alternative but good enough. Using Newpipe you can also access everything on Youtube Music.

InnerTune just picked up a nice update too!
An option is FunkWhale, but most instances don’t allow copyrighted music so most (if not a lot) of famous and music artists in general aren’t available there
unless, of course, you host your own instance, since it’s self-hostable and decentralized too
In an ideal world I’d continue to use my self hosted Navidrome setup but acquiring new music and keeping my library organised is time consuming regardless if how much amazing automated software is out there.
I mostly stick to Innertune at the moment and will probably be fully converted once they add support for YouTube Music login.
If I were to ditch Spotify, I guess I would go back to mp3s.
Spotify works fine on Linux and Android, with Premium you can even use spotify-tui etc.
I don’t see any reason to switch tbh, they haven’t even ramped up the price like Netflix, etc.
this is /Privacy not /SavingMoney… Spotify (and all the leading platforms) collect data on you.
