I think exploding heads folk went to Nostr, so it’s probably got more alt-right folk than is healthy. Though Twitter is a toxic cesspool that morphed into a right wing toxic cesspool.

If I wanted a social media based on people rather than idea, I’d probably go for Mastodon.

Mastodon is turning into what Twitter was and right now is likely the one out of the three to turn into the biggest echo chamber. Twitter under Elon if he keeps his promise will have free speech and no blocking. Nostr is censorship resistant. Mastodon instance admins can defederate other instsnce they do not like and turn mastodon into a echo chamber.

I think Nostr wins since as far as I know they got a blocking feature and users can choose the wild west free speech flow of information or go into a corner of Nostr and follow your interests.

Didn’t he ban several journalists that reported on him banning Elonjet something he said he’d never do, amongst other things. That doesn’t fit in with free speech absolutism or free speech, so I am a little skeptical when he uses that term. You can only judge people by their past actions.

I am not too familiar with Nostr. I think Jack Dorsey endorseyed it. Hopefully there is enough to counter balance the exploding heads. I am massively in favour of free speech, but I don’t like how that is often used as an excuse to freely useoffensives slurs.

Is twitter truly free speech, no but it has improved since Elon took over. I do not think twitter will every be as free speech as it was several years go.

More people of all kinds need to get on Nostr to keep it from being an echo chamber.

And free speech means you will have to deal with “mean words”, just have a thick skin and ignore it. I been getting lots of flack the past few days here on Lemmy and I just drop it and move on. I got no time to let someones comment take root in my head.

There is a difference between mean words and slurs. If you’re not from a protected group, you wouldn’t understand unless you want to. The question is whether empathy is something apply above theoretical concepts. Don’t get me wrong, I’m British and swear like a sailor, and hate when things have swear filters on, but there is a massive difference.

I personally have no idea what is going on on Twitter. I never really used it much as I think condensing thoughts down to a limited set of characters is just a crap design. This is supported by the fact by most users forcing themselves to use threads to work around such a pointless and arbitrary limitation.

You mean one that allows logging in and posting to Twitter aka X, without a significant fee? Not to my knowledge. Lately Elon and co. have been working to make third party clients completely impossible to develop, so it’s either use the official app, use the website, or quit Twitter.

If you just want to browse Twitter, I don’t know of any options for that either, but keep an eye on Nitter; currently it does not work, but they’re apparently working on a way to work around Twitter’s latest changes.

I’ve had a Twitter acct for a long time, and I still use it. I’ve curated my feed to contain virology/epidemiology specialists, independent journalists, and eye candy. I have 2 ways of finding people to follow. 1. When I’m reading on the internet and find something I like, I look to see whether they’ve got a Twitter acct. 2. If someone comments intelligently on a good post, I check their profile. If they post stuff worth reading, I follow them. As for eye candy, I’m attracted to ancient stuff. There are several archaeologists who post.

I’ve “followed” several people from Twitter on Mastodon. I can’t see them in my feed, but I can view the list of people I’ve followed and click on them. For now, their Mastodon posts come from bots that echo their Twitter posts. It looks like everyone’s hedging their bets. If I need to leave Twitter, I can still access most of the info I’m used to getting from there.

Twitter’s not completely a cesspool yet.

    Tried Nostr. Mostly crypto.

At this point I would use Mastodon and follow Twitter users on there through the bird makeup instance. It basically creates mirrors of Twitter accounts so you can see what they post (but you can’t interact). It’ll only add new posts while somebody’s following them though, so you might not have past posts if nobody has followed them yet.

Another thing is some people are posting to both now or have switched entirely. You can see who you follow on Twitter is using Mastodon with this site https://fedifinder.glitch.me/
