I cut my father out of my life just about 20 years ago. He was a selfish alcoholic, drug abuser (I like to have fun like anyone else, but I’m not about pawn my kid’s PlayStation when I don’t have the money to get the goods like my former father did), malingerer and overall shitty dad.
It took years not to let the traits I inherited from him hold me back and/or hurt others, but I can say I’m pretty fucking successful now; I have a dream job, dream home and will be marrying the love of my life next month.
Everything I have now is in spite of him and my shitty upbringing.
Another commenter advised that I add “English” along with “Undetermined” in the language settings for Lemmy. That seems to have done the trick!
I followed a suggestion from another commenter here and added English to my language settings a long with “Undetermined”. That fixed it!
I think this was the trick! Changed language setting so that “Undetermined” and “English” and comments in this very post appeared that weren’t there before! Thanks so much!
Just did this and your comment appeared in my notifications only after doing so! Looks like I’m good now. 😎
Hmmm. I have blocked two users and two NSFW communities. Hard to imagine that low amount of blocking could be the cause for only seeing 2 out of 20 comments on a given post, but maybe?
Just checked, I left the setting as “Undetermined” as it warns that changing the language will make certain content unavailable.

You ain’t kiddin!
Or, you’re an American who lives in a country/continent where there are a wide variety of people outside of your little bubble who have different backgrounds and different cultural norms that you’ve very likely never considered.
See, I can be demeaning too!
I was what I think we would now call a “weeb” in my junior/senior year of high school, and had studied Japanese culture before making a short trip over there in the summer. One of the things I learned was that blowing your nose in public is seen as bad manners, and it really stuck with me. When you think about it, it is pretty gross to loudly blow snot into a tissue (bonus points for carrying a handkerchief!) in front of others, like (as an American) we’ll just do this at the dinner table without batting an eye.
To this day, I try not to blow my nose in public places or in front of folks if I can avoid it, because it has grossed me out ever since learning how Japanese culture perceives it.
I was going to say, I bet there’s a game where you click recommended until you land on a video that is some kind of abhorrent conspiracy nonsense.
