It’s the same on desktop so I don’t think it’s a phone/cache issue.

My whole feed has been hosed for a couple of weeks. I’m seeing zero posts in about half my subbed communities and scant few posts even in the ones that do get them. I’m also not seeing all the comments or votes. I assume this is being worked on, but Lemmy might as well be dead for me. I can go 9 hours without a new post anywhere.

Based on what happened in Ukraine, they might be better off asking Putin. Bypass the middle man.

I don’t know that I can help, but I used to have a blue notebook that I wrote poetry in when I was an angst teen. It probably only had a half dozen that I was really proud of, but I wish I had them still. My mom found it once and then relost it, so maybe some day when my folks are gone I’ll find it again.

It’s definitely cool from that standpoint. Don’t get me wrong. But the output from image and video AI usually doesn’t impress me all that much. It’s technically impressive but the output doesn’t surpass what a competent human can do. And I know the fear is that eventually it will, but I adamantly believe it never will.

Probably. I think that might be the top open source small LLM. I really need to set it up and try it.

That’s a really good point. Lemmy has sort of become my Third Space and Reddit before that. I moved away from home for 5 years then moved back and then covid hit. I haven’t had anyone to hang out and socialize with other than my wife and kids in a long time.

I used to be active in the kink community and we’d go to munches, which were really just a bunch of people united by a sort of bohemian stance towards sexuality getting together and talking about mostly anything else. Religion or secularism was mostly irrelevant. I really miss the kink community for that reason more than anything, you know, particularly deviant. But also being transgressive was fun, too.

Online just doesn’t hit the same.

Yes but also no. Because if the contents of All are unique to each server, that has some implications for which posts appear in the various sorts, right? Maybe I’m overthinking and the effect is minute, but I feel like in at least some cases it would mean less active posts could squeeze out more active posts.

I’m an atheist, and obviously a lot of evil things have been done in the name of religion, but I think there are some incredible things that have resulted from it, too.

People were given solace in times of sorrow. They were given a hope for justice in times of tyranny. The art of the Sistine Chapel, or Buddhist temples, or incredible songs that resonate because of their religious imagery. You wouldn’t have Hallelujah or Spirit in the Sky, and on the other hand you wouldn’t have Imagine - or at least it would hit different. Some addicts rely on it to help them fight addictions.

Some religious traditions helped with sanitation and preventing the spread of disease in a time when we didn’t have other tools to make people understand.

So in the end I think religion has done and continues to do tremendous harm and is mostly an evil force, but there are some incredibly beautiful and important things that came from it that are worth celebrating.

Exactly, exactly this. At best, AI is “so bad it’s good.” But like Hollywood, generally it’s just bad and boring. I guess if it’s funny enough maybe it’s worth sharing the silly thing it did, but let’s not act like it did something cool - it fucked up in a way so surprising that it’s funny. That’s all.

So is the All feed actually all communities and not just ones federated to your instance by virtue of someone on the instance subscribing? That was really the crux of my question.

Do you know how federation affects the sorts? I assume, based on my longer experience with Mastodon, that the All feed is actually just all of the posts that have been federated to my instance i.e. someone on my instance is subscribed to that community. So any communities no one on my server is subscribed to are invisible regardless of sort.

That implies the All feed is unique to each server, and therefore all of the sorts are also unique. Which would mean for at least a certain percentage of posts, they might be in your hot or active feeds, even though no one is really interacting with them much any more.

What do you think? Maybe it doesn’t work as much like Mastodon as I think, but since it’s all the same fediverse it feels like a logical assumption.

Hot and Active feeds pull in a lot of things that are up to 2 days old, but by 12-24 hours at the most, nearly all conversation is done. It’s not nearly as rewarding to interact with posts on those feeds when so few people are even looking at them.

If everyone saw the same feeds, that might be something because maybe the conversation would continue, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the case due to federation.

I try to comment on things so there is engagement and conversation. Without engagement, this is just a collection of bookmarks.

But it’s kinda up to us to create that. Somehow. Sometimes even just a quip or shitpost comment can sort of open the floodgates.
