The problem is that they tend to be smaller, which means harder to find.

This suuuucks. We need another big, general instance that doesn’t defed everyone. But I get it, being an admin sounds like a lot of work or I would do it lol. Plus I don’t have place for a server around here. Or do most admins just buy space from the cloud?

Over analysis caveat of the joke
Of course it’s not state media directly in the states, but the same billionaires who own the state own the media, so it turns out all to be the same thing in the end.
Holy shit actual media criticism and analysis on North Korea. Never thought I’d see this day.
The little clip with the meta-commentary on news stories commenting about them was hilarious yet insightful, so I definitely have to watch the full documentary they’re referencing (EDIT: especially if it’s just the 20 minute video you linked. That’s the full video? I thought I heard the word documentary so thought it would be longer).
1·1 month agoI consider myself a socialist, but shit, I live in capitalism too and have bills to pay lol.
So for a concrete example, if you end up in the worker coop for a finance company and own a slice of that, or work in Microsoft and are an employee-owner of that, you’d end up a lot better than if you worked in a fast food restaurant you partly owned. Is that kind of what you’re saying?

6·7 months agoHas anyone seen any particularly good deals for NAS’s, storage or memory, mini computers, things like that, for this Black Friday / Cyber Monday season?
I’ve got the simplest setup (mini PC with a 4TB USB SSD attached) and was thinking of upgrading to a proper multi-bay NAS, but those things and multiple TB hard drives are going expensive. If anyone has seen any good deals for the holidays I’d love to know!

Ya I don’t mind and I think it’s because this place reminds me a lot of old forums or old reddit. I really miss some of my old forums and the community that would be built there.
. The smaller feel also encourages contributing over lurking, because every individual’s comment can actually get read, unlike the huge megathreads of reddit.
2·7 months agoExactly. I 100% agree with that sentiment.
Two of the developers are scary communist tankies. And no, I don’t think software can be right wing or left wing. Maybe if it’s centralized, like X, but the developers of Lemmy can’t interfere with Lemmy servers they don’t admin, and it’s open source (lots of other people contribute to the Lemmy source code at this point and so would be able to spot things added in).
Personally, I think the right way to advertise other competitors on the fediverse isnt to fear monger about the developers, but to say what features the alternatives have that might be good. Also, it is nice to have competitors, so also just to advertise based on the availability of alternative options, since it is nice to have those just in case.
It is kind of weird thay it hasn’t been done yet, but in that thread they posted it sounded like it’s totally possible at the moment.
Hm… Maybe if I open the app more often I’ll get to that point?
2·7 months agoHopefully the Trump presidency is a wake up call in the importance of privacy. As we slowly move towards fascism, privacy becomes more important than ever.
Their overwhelming market share is probably the main problem.
