I definitely didn’t read it that way from the post. I thought it was about your hobbies and creative interests. I guess you could infer social strata by whether the answerer has time and disposable income for hobbies. Some don’t require much investment, but it’s usually more than none.

My issue with MH was the extensive grinding. Getting a full set of armor from a monster could take dozens of kills, with each kill being 30-60 minutes. If I knew I could get it after a flat 10 or even 20 victories it’d be fine, but you’re at the mercy of 5% drop rates sometimes.

Absolutely. My spouse looks at me like I’m crazy for putting black blankets on the floor in front of all the south-facing windows, but it’s a noticeable difference in those rooms. I also keep the leftover pasta and kettle water out until it’s cooled down instead of dumping hot water down the drain. Helps to avoid running the humidifier too.

This is obviously funny, but I think the end result will be a bit sad. Spammers will (or already are) start to use similar AI programs to cold call people, then transfer to the scammer if they’ve got a live one. Eventually we’re just going to be heating the Earth so that invisible chatbots can have conversations no human will ever hear.

That’s my primary gripe too. I could theoretically work around it if the chat search worked. I’ll try searching for a specific word to see who said it to me and when, but if it was more than a couple days ago I’m out of luck. Later I’ll remember who said it, eventually find them in the sidebar, scroll up 40 pages in the chat, and find the exact word Teams claimed it’s never heard of.

I used to write extensively with C++, but it has been a long time since speed mattered that much to one of my applications. I still marvel at the cache-level optimizations some people come up with, but I’m in the same mindset as you now.

My workload split of Data Movement vs Data Transformation is like 95:5 these days, which means almost all the optimizations I do are changing batch/cache/page/filter settings. I can do that in any language with http bindings, so I choose those that are faster to write.

It felt like the wild west for a while because there were so many open problems and each implementation seemed to be focusing on a subset of them. Git handles all of them with decent enough speed that there isn’t much incentive to go against the grain.

I think Git is good enough and so ubiquitous that we won’t see a competitor until coding itself drastically changes shape. Who knows what that will look like, but if it’s not collections of relatively flat files then Git may someday be replaced.

This is what I’ve seen too. Directors come back from a conference and suddenly we’re learning a newer but objectively worse system. Obviously the grunts using the systems aren’t consulted, but are expected to be team players through this educational experience.

See if there are Board Game shops in your city. If they have tables for Magic the Gathering you can check their calendar and usually find open board gaming nights. In my experience people usually bring a bunch of their own games and are open to new players. Some of the people in our group don’t own any games; the rest of us are always bringing more than we can possibly play anyway.

I have no advice, but I have a similar issue. Firefox on Windows 10 with just uBlock Origin.

YouTube works fine at first, but if I watch a lot of videos in a row then after an hour or so it starts to load slowly. Then it stutters, then finally I get audio and a single frame for the whole video. Shorts seem to accelerate the descent. I haven’t tried live streams yet, but I bet I’d get the same result.

Completely closing all Firefox instances and reopening fixes it for an hour. It acts like a memory leak, but I’m not even close to maxing out my RAM when it crashes. My fans get loud which makes me wonder if it’s botching the hardware acceleration.

Sadly I can’t help beyond telling you you’re not crazy.

When I was a kid we would have yearly morel hunts. My uncles were always scouting the neighbors’ woods, and once morels were sighted we’d sneak onto their property and gather bags of 'em. We’d usually get about 10 pounds between the six of us cousins. Then Grandma would fry them up and we’d feast.

One year I ate at least a pound by myself. That night I got so violently ill I thought I would die. I never ate morels again.

Now you have me wondering if one of us picked a not-morel and I was the unlucky one who ate it.

Universe is my favorite, with SG1 close behind. I feel like Universe tried too hard to be Battlestar Galactica at first and the network wasn’t impressed when it didn’t hit it off like BSG. I would have loved another season.
