It’s called git. It’s been distributed from day 1. GitHub was an attempt to centralize it.

There is one big caveat to universal time:

Future dates: If you use utc here and a time zone definition changes, you’re boned. You have to store local time and offset for just this one usecase.

I have been using unstable on desktop for at least 15 years. Every time a new stable was released that would cause a month of just staying off updates till things stabilized. Recently it’s not even had that issue.

I’ve had to pin a package or two in that time, but unstable has been rock solid otherwise. I even run it on my server.

First hard drive Linux: Debian.

Eventually red hat for several years, then back to Debian based (mint etc) around 2005. Been using Sid (Debian “unstable”) for a long time.

There are no Linux gatekeepers. There are assholes everywhere, that’s the human condition. I came across these assholes and I learnt that I should take advice and consider it myself.

If you close your brain and listen to random online people without thought, you’ll have a bad time, Linux or no Linux.

This stereotype of people in Linux or open source as assholes is FUD spread by people who have a vested interest in spreading it.

I’ve found people mostly very helpful and courteous.

Was riding my bicycle on a fence divided road in the center looking to turn, when a car drove past me and scared me into flinching towards the divider. The handlebar stuck in the divider and came to an immediate rest. My momentum took me over the handlebars and onto my face. Musta looked pretty goofy.

I have been running sid (unstable) on my desktop since 2013. I’ve had maybe 4 issues in all those years. This is through multiple ram, diak, power supply, motherboard upgrades. It just runs fine.

Shit like this made me dump Mint more than a decade ago. I’ve been very happy with Debian (Sid).

The big issue is that by adding more and more features, a browser has become an operating system and so complex that you can’t hope to make a new one from scratch.

The last “new” browser engine (that wasn’t built by a corporation) was KHTML which was stolen harvested first by Apple for Webkit and subsequently by Google for Blink. KHTML then rotted without support.

The most recent attempt was to build Servo in Rust. Mozilla “ran out of money” (they depend on Google for their existence), and it’s already rotting.

There is no such thing as a visual learner.

Gonna respectfully disagree back at you. You don’t have to get a $100 crapsung, but most people whose work depends on a good phone still don’t need a $2000 top of the line phone.

An iPhone SE or Pixel ?a phone is more than sufficient for almost anyone anything more I’m probably going to call opulence.

While I was single I had multiple side projects for my own amusement.

More recently, I haven’t had time to scratch that itch and the urge has been getting worse to the point that I’m now doing a bit of side stuff during work hours (but not on work hardware).

They talk amongst themselves about how shit the code is.

“Bleeding long term hires” are reading the tea leaves. Better to get a new job when you have one, finding a job when you need it is much harder.

Talking about tech startups:

Depends on the startup. If they have a good team, they might get acqui-hired. If they have any patents or other IP, they might get acquired (for not much). Investors get the bulk of these types of exits, and the founders and employees get screwed.

If the startup doesn’t even have that, they may just wrap up the operation and go out of business.
