To tack on - if you’re still pretty early, beginner textbook style lessons will be the most helpful at the start. If your main goal is to communicate with folks in a the short term, memorize set phrases and common verbs (along w/ basic conjugation rules).

It’s surprising how much you can get by with when you have limited vocab and speed, but know how to ask someone clarifying questions or ask if they can slow it down.

Picking up a 2nd (or more) language is just going to be hard. There’s not a magic shortcut, or anything you can buy or course to take that will make you fluent in a month.

That out of the way, there are lots of resources out there!

Look up comprehensible input channels on YouTube (eg, Dreaming Spanish). You can find something at your level, even down to the point where they’ll mostly point at pictures and say words. Eventually add in things like cartoons, news, podcasts, or social media when you feel up to it.

There’s debate about whether you need anything besides input. I’m partial to a mixed approach, so I’d say get a good textbook too.

Anki is great for vocab flashcards (but you’ll have to find decks, which can be annoying). Apps like Duolingo can be a good supplement too.

Make a habit through the day or thinking about how to say things in Spanish. Repeat your sentences in your head, or think about what the Spanish version would be of signs you see.

It’s just a long term goal though, to get anywhere meaningful. Engage with your target language every day.

Yes. Having centralized ownership (to whatever extent) is a concern for sure, but it’s a hypothetical concern in and of itself: “what if the leadership does bad things?” Is different from “the leadership is currently doing bad things.”

Decentralization helps. But if the networks effects aren’t behind it, jumping from platform to platform when things DO get bad is also viable.

That’s fun! It’s silly, but I do enjoy thinking about what my favorite thing in xyz category is and jotting them down, from time to time.

Would be cool if this included some pre-populated sample lists out of the box. Love that the import option is readily available though.

Also, mild inconcevenice - after I view a list, rank some things, maybe repeat a few times, pressing back takes me from list, to rank, etc, when I want it to go back to all lists page. If that makes sense.

Not quite dry, but we combine the dry ones with some coleslaw mix, the flavor packet, some sugar, and some apple cider vinegar. Turns out crunchy and delicious.

I didn’t care too much about API changes at first - I used an open source app on my phone, but mostly browsed desktop. Would have been fine going back to desktop only. As long as they keep the old site design around, I’d be fine to stay.

What killed it for me was the absolutely un-caring, not-budging response from leadership. I don’t feel good continuing to feed the site my attention at that point.

I like quirky Foss stuff anyway, so I was already curious about Mastodon and Lemmy. But I’d always figured they’d be ghost towns. Twitter and Reddit deliberately being proudly, blatantly awful was enough to push me out to here, along with enough other folks.

Letting rage take over is not the right path, never is. Give yourself a little time and space to cool off. (Not to diminish that the situation sucks. It sounds terrible and I’m sorry for that.)

However, if you’re not happy at work, looking for a new place is the thing to do. Update your resume, and take your time to find a new job. Importantly, don’t quit voluntarily until after you find something else. Don’t get ahead of yourself.

Well said. Within the existing framework of copyright law, the emergency open library thing that got them sued seems obviously illegal, despite it being a good thing. What’s good and what’s legal don’t always line up.

The Internet Archive’s work is too important. The library portion (that does controlled digital lending of published books) is nice, but I wouldn’t be too hurt if it goes down. Regular public libraries can fill a lot of that role. But the archive itself is incredible, and losing that would be a huge shame.

Legally, I don’t know that admitting fault and saying sorry does much good, but it certainly isn’t surprising that they got into hot water here.

I think what you’re describing at the end there is basically what Brave (browser) tried to do.

Excellent book. It’s very far from hands-on, and doesn’t even address UI in particular most of the time. Won’t tell you how to lay out anything, but puts you on the right empathetic mindset for design in general.

Based on OP’s description, might be just the ticket, but may also be too general for some tastes.

Ebooks have their convenience, and once in a while I’ll take a free one if offered, or pick them up cheap in a bundle.

But physical books capture my interest way better. More satisfying to hold and look at. Having a physical object around is a reminder to read. And paper books are better for tuning out distractions. If I try to read ebooks on a phone, tablet, or PC I can easily lose focus (though nice dumb-device readers are surely out there, I don’t have one).

And I meant to say, most helpful resource for me was the website rtings. Most review and best of lists I can find by searching are so spammy, it’s hard to get any signal. But at least that one let’s me filter a table of printers by features. I just don’t know how many they’re missing.

Had to get a new one recently too. I’ve had good experiences w/ Brother in the past too, but couldn’t find one that quite fit the bill. Needed color and for it to be able to handle cardstock.

Ended up getting an Epson, one that’s in the eco tank line. Has been great so far. Works just fine out of the box on Linux (LTS Ubuntu, anyway)

I had similar happen to me. Put all of it together, turned it on, then panicked a little when it wouldn’t boot up.

Turns out one stick of RAM was not fully slotted in, so obviously that’s not OK. Was easy to spot once I double checked components. Popped it back out and in, then it was good to go.

Have you checked your local library? Can be hit or miss, but many have a variety of digital and CD resources available.
