Really, because since I blocked most meme communities, I feel like all I’m getting in Lemmy lately is news about Twitter and Bluesky.

OneDrive doesn’t take over directories without being told to. And specifically, it’s “Known Folders Move” system, only does Documents, Desktop, and Pictures. If KFM is being turned on without user consent, that is IT’s fault. If it is including folders outside those 3? Also IT’s fault.

It corrupting git repos? Not sure on that one. It doesn’t feel like OneDrive should be doing that, but it does struggle with unusual read/write patterns, so I’m guessing the way git is working doesn’t resemble a standard file saving, and Microsoft being full of developers and owning github should probably be accounting for that use case.

That’s quite a wall of text there. I work in IT, probably the first part of the tech sector to be outsourced, and it has been known as a bad idea for a long time, but it keeps happening. I know of one fortune 50 company that, a little over 1 year ago, outsourced their IT to India. Everything from help desk to knowledge management. They are bringing it back because it was a disaster.

That isn’t to blame India. I’m sure it is full of skilled workers, but you don’t outsource to get the best, you outsource to get cheaper. So what you end up with is the worst workers. And then you tack on a language barrier on top of that and suddenly work in the US grinds to a halt. The problem is, it does save money for a few quarters, the execs who pushed it get their bonuses, and then the real cost hits as systems break down.

But my company is special!

Its uses are way more subtle than the hype, but even LLMs can have uses, occasionally. Specifically, I use one to categorize support tickets. It just has to pick from a list of probable categories. Nice and simple for it. Something humans can do just as easily, but when you have a history of 2 million tickets that need to be categorized, suddenly the LLM can do it when it would drive a human insane. I’m sure there are lots of little tasks like that. Nothing revolutionary, but still valuable.

Of course everyone’s ears are different, but for me, my Jabras lock in. They aren’t going anywhere. They are designed to be twisted into place, causing a literal lock into your ear. I can force them out without touching them, but it takes work to do it, they aren’t falling out on their own, and if they start to come loose, I’ll know instantly because the seal is broke and I can hear that they aren’t settled in right.

LLMs aren’t it, but AI, as in the computer science field, has been helping the medical industry since it has existed.

That one is creamy, so no. But there is gritty peanut butter, we generally refer to it as “chunky”.

LLMs are AI as it is defined in Computer Science, not SciFi. And the lane assist on your car might also be, although it may just be a well tuned PID for all I know.

Meshtastic is a great one. People are making all kinds of software for it. I saw someone developing a BBS for it. For those who want a summary: Meshtastic is a very low bandwidth radio system for creating mesh networks. The speed of data transfer is similar to the modems of the 80s, so you aren’t transferring anything but text. But the range is good and the hardware is cheap, and it is completely stand alone. It can normally pair with something like a phone for ease of access, but has its own dedicated device for a radio.

Effectively, the other option is passwords, and people are really, really, bad at passwords. Password managers help, but then you just need to compromise the password manager. Strong SSO, backed by hardware, at least makes the attack need to be either physical, or running on a hardware approved by the company. When you mix that with strong execution protections, an EDR, and general policy enforcement and compliance checking, you get protection that beats the pants off 30 different passwords to 30 different sites, or more realistically, 3 passwords to 30 different sites.

The modern direction is actually going the other way. Tying identity to hardware, preventing access on unapproved or uncompliant hardware. It has the advantage of allowing biometrics or things like simple pins. In an ideal world, SSO would ensure that every single account, across the many vendors, have these protections, although we are far from a perfect world.

Kaspersky has caused BSODs because of updates in the past as well. Hardly an AV maker hasn’t. The problem here is that Crowd Strike has captured the enterprise market in a large portion of the globe.

It’s overhead is more subtle than task manager can tell. Because of all its watching and monitoring, it slows down applications themselves. Task take longer. Sometime it is by a trivial amount, but I’ve been able to measure a notable difference in some task with and without S1, even if task manager says all is well.

SentinelOne. They are more reseller/MSP friendly, but the product is very similar to CrowdStrike.

I know there is a lot of marketing fluff, but yes, it is an EDR. Which means instead of just checking file signatures against a database if known bad stuff, it actually examines what applications do and makes a sort of judgement on if it is acting maliciously or not. I use a similar product. Although the false positives can sometimes be baffling, it honestly can catch a legit program misbehaving.

On top of that, everything is logged. Every file, network connection, or registry key that every process on the computer touches is logged. That means when something happens, you can see the full and complete list of actions taken by the malicious system. Thus can actually be a drain on the computer, but modern systems handle it well enough.

Financially? Yeah, AI is a bubble for sure. Gobs of money are being poured in with few results to show for it. That bubble will burst. But just like the dotcom bubble, that doesn’t mean the technology is useless or won’t change the world, just not instantly over night with a single investment, which is what the investment groups expect.

Since I was personally called out here, Windows 10 was my last home version of Windows, but it was earlier days of 10. For work, however, I manage about 1700 Windows workstations and servers, so I know all those problems still. To be fair, I’ve been running Linux in some form since before Ubuntu existed. I think it was Debian in 2001 or 2002 that was my first Linux desktop.

In this case, "web’ means web browsers, not servers. Godot projects can be exported as static web pages. Sure, the storage is someone else’s linux box, but execution happens on your local device.

West Side Story was made so that a new generation could understand Romeo and Juliet. It did well what this AI is probably going to do poorly. I agree that this is a dumb idea for a service, and I really doubt any of the current AIs will do it the original works any justice when it comes to wordplay, clever phrasing, or other subtle details expert authors put into their works. That doesn’t, however, mean that rewriting works to be more accessible isn’t a very valid thing to do. Hell, that’s what translation does.
