There are no alternative clients for WhatsApp as far as I know.
The only thing worth looking into are Matrix Bridges (or something with a similar name) but it’s a paid solution.

Being in the Privacy community, I’d say microG is the superior solution to have the functionality you need without giving google access to your device.

their website shouts “scam”, but maybe they just have poor taste.
they give a pretty weird answer about audits in their FAQs. I’m not an expert, but I wouldn’t trust them compared to Mullvad which I currently use.
