I’ve been on the waitlist for a while and am excited to get through. It may suck but it’s worth testing. The privacy issues aren’t ideal but it doesn’t seem like they sell your data.

Is there a reason behind this?

I think the more peers there are the faster it is.

I wonder if IPFS could have a part in this? We’ll find a solution.

Just FYI vanillaOS is an awesome system to suggest to both new users and experienced ones. None of the snap BS but still based on Ubuntu. It also makes it really hard to mess up your system. Vanilla Gnome too. Check it out.
