Reminds me of this ropeway thing that Tom Scott covered that doesn’t require power input either, for similar reasons:
Niche application but still cool.

The distinction between that and a malicious hack consists entirely of intent .
The fact that they can fuck up this bad and only lose 20 percent is kind of hilarious. Major infrastructure across the world is on its knees because of their fuck up. If that’s not enough to kill them then nothing is.
Edit - when I checked they were rebounding, only down 11.3 percent today now. I guess the stockmarket has determined that this fuckup isn’t so bad.
Agreed on both counts. This happened because Microsoft made adoption easy. And this will be fixed within a day. None of the fundamentals have shifted. Even though it’s stupid, this isn’t going to fundamentally shake anything up.
Similarly: if you write a program to randomly run through all the combinations of pixels on a decently large screen (say, 1080p) you will eventually see every important question and answer that can be expressed on a screen.
It’s an argument for decentralization. An argument that won’t be heeded.
Ticketmaster is worse than scalpers.
I just looked it up and…
SF6 has 23,500 times greater global warming potential (GWP) than CO2 as a greenhouse gas (over a 100-year time-frame) but exists in relatively minor concentrations in the atmosphere. Its concentration in Earth’s troposphere reached 11.50 parts per trillion (ppt) in October 2023, rising at 0.37 ppt/year.[8] The increase since 1980 is driven in large part by the expanding electric power sector, including fugitive emissions from banks of SF6 gas contained in its medium- and high-voltage switchgear. Uses in magnesium, aluminium, and electronics manufacturing also hastened atmospheric growth.[9] The 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which came into force in 2005, is supposed to limit emissions of this gas. In a somewhat nebulous way it has been included as part of the carbon emission trading scheme. In some countries this has led to the defunction of entire industries.[10]
Umm wtf? Why are we selling this stuff in compressed air cans ? Even methane is “only” 30x more potent than CO2 .
Because that’s the cooling system required to run the thing. It requires more toxic coolant, that will eventually end up in the ocean, than several hundred supercomputer megaclusters and sucks more power than a thousand suburbs.
Congrats on getting upvotes for this utter bullshit, none of which is substantiated in the article you linked.
Edit- this was at +15 when I first saw it.
This shit belongs in your diary dude.
Again please explain how they are over rated.
If I say “x is overrated” it’s a statement of my opinion relative to the average rating of x. That’s literally what the sentence means. Stating the average rating of x doesn’t disprove anything. You’re not even engaging with the idea lol. And there’s little reason to since it’s literally just someone’s opinion relative to the mainstream.
You’re confusing over/under rated with popularity.
Western countries employing Indian coders are generally looking for the cheapest coders they can find who speak passable English. All of that sounds like you got what you paid for.
Lol this dude just has to take one for the team .
It could be argued that such delayed trade should be encouraged. Let Apple’s debt to Kaspersky build up, with interest, but it’ll only be paid once sanctions end which will only happen once pre-determined conditions are met. It’s basically an increasing incentive to change course in a way that will result in sanctions being lifted.
There are probably some pretty severe downsides to this approach though.
Thank you for your wisdom Ms. Tightpussy.
Size really does matter for sites like this. Reddit still hosts many smaller subs for niche topics that often have limited toxicity. Lemmy can’t match it yet unfortunately.
Features like this can almost never be privacy-friendly because they’re developed expressly to violate your privacy. The value it provides you , as cool as that could be, is just how it’s sold.
Not storing this shit unencrypted was pretty fucking obvious dude.
Say that again but this time put some stank on it.
