  • I think the biggest end user perspective difference between mastodon and Lemmy is mastodon is designed more for following people and organizations and the occasional hashtag topic like Twitter, Lemmy is closer to reddit in that is more organized for topics and communities where individual identities are less important, less people use legal names, etc. I also see more advertising on mastodon but that may just be an instance or moderator thing and not a general difference.

  • Ethically you can make as many digital or physical personal copies as you want for yourself outside of perhaps a concern for wasting resources but if you sell them you’re taking away earnings from an author or rights holder or owner which may each have different moral weight and require recognition of property rights as a thing worth having. But if you’re caught with hundreds or thousands of copies or copies where they are easily accessible to the public it’s going to appear pretty suspicious.

  • Capitalist propaganda has had decades to hone and refine their techniques for manipulation and deception, the only way to win is to not play their rigged game, but if you’re forced to because they’ve captured all of the resources under a government backed judiciary that’s purpose is to centralize wealth and power under a minority ownership class i think you’d be justified to take more drastic measures to subvert or remove their propaganda.

Maybe I’m off on this but suffering/misery would include pain + the emotional state of unhappiness or we would just use pain for both? Avoiding painful stimuli doesn’t tell me about their emotional state or cognitive awareness of the pain, just an awareness of the stimuli.

How do you measure how much misery a cod feels?

Edit: sorry that was a bit snarky. I don’t think you’re completely off the mark but I would think an animal needs at least a nervous system to experience pain, so there are categories to consider and it may be morally virtuous to abstain from eating some animals but not necessarily immoral, and we should be careful to anthropomorphize other animal emotional states.
