Revolt and Matrix are rather similar. Personally, I would recommend Matrix because it has the slight edge of offering room message content encryption, should you choose to use it. If you don’t… At that point, it’s kind of a toss-up, honestly.
Advantages of Revolt:
Situated themselves to roll out features more rapidly
Closer interface to Discord
If you delete a message on their server, your deletion journey is done
Advantages of Matrix:
You can encrypt the content of the messages in rooms
They don’t have to be situated on a single server; in fact, they can be shared among many servers
Data is not relegated to a single server, and can persist even if that server shuts itself down or is shut down
Most important to me: Which of them is easier to self-host?
I’ve been running a Mumble server for my friends for over a decade now and I’d like… something more without having to get too technical. Mumble is literally just a single apt-get and you’re basically done, so that’s about the level of technical expertise that I bring to the table. I’ve tentatively looked into other solutions over the years but I always feel my attention drifting when the setup-tutorial covers multiple pages and starts with manually configuring some database or certificate authority or whatever. Sorry, I didn’t mean for this to get too ranty.
