whenever a cool name springs to my mind, i add it to a text file. i use that file when i create accounts or game characters and mark names in it i already used.

Exactly. Average person, not a big deal. But if someone for some reason decides to target you, you give them a huge amount of days about you quickly. I tend to make a new name for each service.
Oh, I don’t use this name everywhere. I like to be recognized online, but the Venn diagram of those who know me online and those who know me offline is basically two separate circles.

I have a couple of usernames that I have used - or, more often, used variations of - for quite some time over a range of sites. However, it is not so much that I am attached to them as such. It is more that I can’t be arsed to come up with something new each time.
Pretty attached. My parents picked it.
If I could just be “Bill” everywhere I would but it really only works on the fediverse.
